Marlene Imirzian was interviewed by Here & Now for a piece on her approaches to sustainable design in a desert landscape, especially at a time where Arizona temperatures continue to break records. The new Life Science Building at Paradise Valley Community College and HomeNZ, the net-zero energy home sponsored by the City of Phoenix, served as the focal point of the discussion.

The two projects are prime examples of architecture that address the current climate crisis and adapt to its conditions while providing outstanding design of spaces, exterior activity, and community connection.

      Life Science Building

The Life Science Building is a vision of what science can be for the community – a catalyst. The building teaches by example with its climate driven sustainable solutions for the built environment. A large roof canopy and collaboration pods create a dynamic public portico that provides a shaded campus connection, engaging building entries and primary circulation that is protected from direct sun. The campus walkway becomes a pedestrian bridge, floating lightly above the desert landscape. Paving is limited so that heat generated from site surfaces is minimized. Generous daylighting, that is shaded, is provided in all occupied spaces. Water harvesting is done by the unique roof design which directs all roof water into an underground cistern where it is used for all site irrigation.

      HomeNZ

HomeNZ is a single family home designed by Imirzian that was selected by the City of Phoenix as winner of a design competition aiming to create a sustainable home with low energy use. HomeNZ allows for net-zero operation with solar panel and battery installation. The house features high thermal performing exterior construction, daylighting, natural ventilation, roof-mounted solar panels and battery, rainwater collection, and passive cooling techniques. The design minimizes the amount of energy consumption necessary for operation. The City of Phoenix has a web feature of the house, where permit approved plans are accessible to the public for anyone who would like to construct a sustainable home.

The article was also recognized in the Late Edition: Southwest of The Architect’s Newspaper as part of their newsletter’s “What We’re Reading” section.

We could be—and should be—implementing these practices in every piece of new construction.”  The competition was sponsored through a partnership between the City of Phoenix and the American Institute of Architects.”

    • “Topping Out” of Miramar College Science Building

      San Diego Community College District

Ursula Kroemer – Communications Director / Sandi Trevisan – Public Information Officer, San Diego Miramar College

SAN DIEGO – A “topping out” for the Science Building expansion at San Diego Miramar College was held Monday, marking the construction milestone of reaching the highest structural point in the project.

The ceremonial practice started in Scandinavia over 1,000 years ago.  Upon reaching the highest point, workers traditionally put into place a small evergreen tree as a symbol of good faith and good luck.

In keeping with this longstanding construction tradition, the final vertical beam used for the Science Building expansion  was made available for construction crew members, campus and district dignitaries, students and other guests to sign before it was hoisted into place along with an evergreen tree and American flag.

The Science Building expansion project includes a new 50,000 square foot structure and conversion of some space on the first and second levels to provide a breezeway to the entrance of the new building.

The first level of the new building includes classrooms and faculty offices totaling approximately 18,000 square feet. The second level includes teaching laboratories for chemistry, astronomy, geology, anatomy, marine biology, microbiology, physics, biology, and lab preparation rooms totaling approximately 27,000 square feet. The roof level has a greenhouse and observatory totaling 1,000 square feet of occupied space. The overall site improvement area is approximately 100,000 square feet.  It is on track to obtain a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), one of more than 40 LEED certifications awarded or planned for SDCCD projects.

The $34 million Science Building expansion project is one of nine projects currently under construction as part of the San Diego Community College District’s $1.555 billion Propositions S & N construction bond program.
